About me
Holistic health, vegetarianism, fitness, and health have always been a major part of my life. Growing up in Scotland, come rain or shine, I was always outside. My parents would say "Get outside for some fresh air - and don't come home until dark." I loved swimming, horseback riding, and hockey. In college, I played squash and swam.
I shocked my parents by deciding, at age 8, to become a vegetarian. My childhood family was, and still is, a meat and potato family. (And they wonder why they have health issues!) I remain a vegetarian, and my own sons grew up strong and healthy on a vegetarian diet.
After college, my husband and I emigrated from Scotland to America. That was in 1985. In order to stay home with my baby boys, I became a certified fitness instructor. I taught for many years at local fitness centres, and held contracts in the private sector. I went on to study and receive a degree in Holistic Nutrition.
Once my boys were of school age, I pursued my other love: art. I earned a teaching certificate through the Duncan Ceramic University, and opened my own ceramic studio, where I taught classes. I loved helping people with their creativity, and especially enjoyed the look of satisfaction on their faces when they came to collect their masterpieces. Clients also looked upon my classes as a wonderful stress buster.
After some time, I realized I wanted to get back into the wellness industry. I sold my studio as a going concern in 2003, and received certification as a wellness coach through the Wellness Inventory, a 30 year-old program recognized by the Coaching Federation of America. At this time, I also received a degree from Clayton College of Natural Health and wish to someday continue my studies with them.
I also offer Reiki and am at level two, studying for level three, and planning to go on to masters level. (Reiki helped me get through foot surgery - three times!) I am learning reflexology through the Washington Holistic Institute. I am also a volunteer with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, working with a dietitian to help local schools implement healthier, vegetarian lunch choices.
